The Problem Is, The Zune Is Brown

Good Work, and Nice Blog
Hmm, am I the only one that thinks that the Brown Zune looks alright?
the brown reminds me of my dad's old Macintosh stereo, which is a good thing in my mind.

"...a more profound problem with the Zune: A lack of vision. "

"Instead of aiming at the competition, the team should have been aiming for the lead."
You could say this about ANYTHING Microsoft does. They are not leaders... Not innovators. They don't even copy their competitors well. They try to be different, thinking it's better, but they miss it each time. This player is yet another example.

I'm curious to know why you say they pulled this off in a short timeframe. Other people have been creating players for years. Microsoft has either been working for a long time on this, or sleeping on it until recently.

I'm with you Arvind. And I had the same reaction as Ginevra, thinking about my dad's old stereo system.
I like the brown! I just don't know why they called it brown. :)

There was an article in a Dutch paper today about how tomorrow's fashion and colours in particular are decided today. They interviewed some people in the colour-predicting business and they all said by 2008 warm earthy colours will be the thing, so maybe the makers of Zune were on to something. But yeah, maybe not call it 'brown'. Zune Earth has a ring to it.
I agree, the name Brown is a little odd. Zune Earth does have a much better ring to it and conjures up a nicer image in my head!

Hopefuly the hardware will support some major software enhancements in the future.

I'm wondering if, by calling it the more prosaic "brown" instead of chocolate (or shoe, or poop, or earth) Microsoft isn't trying to distance themselves from (1) Apple's legacy of creative color names for its products (Snow, Graphite, Lime, Indigo, Blueberry...), or (2) anything remotely resembling the color names you'd see in a Tweeds catalog.
Hearing the "Flintstone flop" sound in the video alone was worth the price of admission. Nice writeup, too.

"shoe"! I love this!

"[this is brown]" = outstanding! I'll be stealing this.
Without knowing why, it's not worth comparing Zune with Apple. While Apple used to come up with creative names for colors (plus there were the trippy flower power or blue dalmation iMacs) they've already ditched that for straightforward color names.

I'm surprised no one has said "coffee" yet. What about "Tree bark"? "Burnt"?

Loam.

I found out about the Brown Zune from a dude at Tweeter 2 nights ago. I was shocked! But if you think about it, Microsoft probably just needed a color that hadn't been done before. Between Creative and Apple, most colors have been claimed. White and black are certainly copycat colors—especially white. But brown is different. It's new. There's never been a popular brown DAP. Too bad it's ugly. ;-)
That was sort of my point (in an indirect fashion). It was cool when Apple did it half a decade ago. Using such names now would only reinforced how played out super-fantastico color names are.
hmm, i would have to disagree with you on the "lack of vision." i think they are very focused on discovery of new music via sharing with other zune users. and frankly, i think it's a killer idea. how the implementation goes is a whole 'nother can of worms.

regarding the Brown issue: the general market for zune isn't aiming to be a bunch of engadget nerds like us, but people who are in best buy, pick it up and say, "hey, this is sweet. i want one." they'll see it in person (not on the web) first, and won't care that the color is called "brown" instead of "tree." (in fact, they probably won't even know what the colors are called. they'll just see it and know they love it.)

anyways, love the commercial! the sound effects are clutch.

sounds like a lack of creative vision in the package designing phase....someone actually thought "yeah, we will just call it brown.....that is fine"
it's definitely a nice turd color on the web...yuuuck

HA! The brown zune commercial. I think I hurt something. :)
This was hilarious!
