I've been feeling a quiet nostalgia of New York autumns for the past few weeks abd this post just made me want to jump on a jet plane to go back. *sigh* I miss New York.

I love that this neighborhood has so establishments were you want to be a regular. And they want you to be a regular, too.

I'm with Matt. Marvelous writing.

And why I love Hayes Valley, as far as the retailers/restauranteurs/barkeeps are concerned, don't really have neighbors we've bonded with yet except our downstairs one.

Definitely got "get Anil and Alaina to show us their East Village if their time permits" on my list for next time Joe & I are in New York.

This is very nice writing Anil - some of your best in my eyes because all of us can relate at some level to what you've written. I live in a small town of 20k in Ohio and have for the last (almost) 30 years. Having a place where you can walk down the city streets and know people by face - if not by name - is something we all want.

Of course small towns in Ohio are very different from east coast metropolitan areas - but we all want the same belonging. Or at least I think so. My home town is no where near as cosmopolitan as the community you describe - but it's still endearing to those of us who live here.

I totally agree with your post and feelings. I live on the Upper West Side and I know my regular places for whatever I need. It is so convenient, and I could never imagine living anywhere else! NY Love here! I used to live in the midwest for a short while, but longed for a big city. However when I moved to NY, I realized being in a big city can have that small town city feel if you make your community work for you! Thanks for sharing!
